BBC Property Strategy
UK wide property strategy
As part of the Design Studio at BBC Property, Paul was key strategist for the restructuring of BBC’s property strategy. The BBC owned 500 buildings, most in poor condition with high maintenance requirements, and many with impending costs for compliance renovations.
The masterplanning process defined what facilities should be constructed where. Paul was involved with planning major new digital broadcast centres in London, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Key Outcomes:
A series of new state of the art broadcasting centres to future-proof the organisation with digital media.
Our Approach
The strategy involved teasing out the key requirements from the diverse stakeholders who ranged from business, technology, creative and administration, and synthesising that into coherent briefs suitable for interpretation by the construction industry.
Our Process
The briefing process involved working with the business and technology leaders to understand the requirements and create an accurate and inspiring brief which could translate the requirements into the built form.
In addition the there was a huge variety of properties to analyse and define the fate of apart from the major centres. Including old music halls (Golders Green Hippodrome) to Outside Broadcast vehicle depots (Kendal Avenue) The sites were analysed by a combination of inspection, spreadsheet analysis and sketch, to determine whether to renovate, redevelop or sell.
The Results
As part of the inspired leadership Paul provided to the BBC, it won several client of the year awards. These initiatives created future-proofed buildings and helped pioneer the trend for ‘new ways of working’ and workplaces where well-being and creativity is at the forefront.
